The grapefruit in this simple and effective recipe, which is covered in greater depth over at Linda Wagner’s weight loss blog, deserves talking about in a bit more detail. Besides being a good source of vitamins A and C that are important for your immune function, it has revealed its potential for curbing higher cholesterol levels, type 2 diabetes and fat in recent years. In particular, a research team at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, have recently discovered that naringenin, an antioxidant extracted from bitter grapefruit, can possibly enhance the liver’s fat decomposition ability by improving sensitivity to insulin – something that current anti-diabetic and lipid-lowering drugs already rely on. The same derivative may also shield the liver against damage.

You may never have thought of it like that, but even a vegetable that is as seemingly insignificant as lettuce has a role in weight loss, as the creators of this recipe recognize thoroughly well. In fact, it should be one of the first things you think about when switching to a weight loss diet. Lettuce helps you combat obesity in a two pronged way: first, it is super low on calories, which means you can use it to make your juice more fulfilling without racking up its energy density. Moreover, it is rich in fiber, which is, on its own, an excellent way to curb the hunger pangs associated with a fat loss diet.

Speaking of vegetables often overlooked for their weight fighting properties, Brussels sprouts are quite a good contender. They are filled with fibers, and contain very few calories, which makes them an ideal filler in juices to curb those hunger pangs. But their usefulness goes further than this: unlike most other vegetables, they contain a lot of protein (over a quarter of their calories by composition), which means that they aren’t just empty fillers – they’re actually helping you maintain your lean muscle mass even as you follow a weight loss plan. It seems that the people who created this recipe knew that juices run the risk of lean mass decrease, which is why their recipe contains brussels sprouts.

We all know that an apple a day keeps the doctor at bay, but who would have thought that it does the same for weight gain! As per a recent study mentioned in Food Chemistry, the non-digestible compounds present in apples encourage the growth of friendly bacteria in your gut which are linked to weight loss. Consequently the good bacteria outweigh the bad ones that live on junk food according to Giuliana Noratto, a food scientist and the study’s lead author. This balance in your internal microbes lowers chronic inflammation and thus reduces the chance of obesity, besides making you feel fuller.

A single kiwi fruit will have just 42 calories, which means that you can easily eat it whole on a diet plan! It appears that the author of this recipe was aware of the difficulties people face in sticking to a weight loss diet, which is why they included a tasty fruit into their mix.

The special thing about celery is its reputation as a ‘negative-calorie’ food. What this means, for the average person looking to lose weight, is that it actually takes the body more calories to digest it than amount present in the vegetable itself! One stalk of celery contains just a single calorie, so you can use it as filler for your juice without worrying about gaining unwanted bulk.

By now, you will have surely realized that there is a lot more to losing weight than is shown on TV commercials and magazine ads. There is no such thing as a ‘miracle ingredient’ for curbing weight loss, to the contrary, all ingredients present in weight loss juices are fairly ordinary, and some, in fact, you may never have associated with losing weight in your life before!
